Training Course on 'Poverty, Living Conditions and Cross-Cutting Social Issues' in Senegal

In accordance with its 2014 Annual Work Plan and within the framework of the Statistical Capacity Building (StatCaB) Programme, SESRIC in collaboration with AFRISTAT co-organised the training course on 'Poverty, Living Conditions and Cross-Cutting Social Issues' at the National Agency of Statistics and Demographics (ANSD) in Dakar, Republic of Senegal on 10-14 November 2014. The course was conducted by Mr. Siriky Coulibaly, Poverty Analysis Expert of AFRISTAT, with the participation of 18 officials of ANSD, CSO/PRODES, DPEE, and UCSPE of Senegal.

As defined in the Classification of Statistical Activities (CSA Rev. 1 - October 2009); poverty, living conditions and cross-cutting social issues includes work on multidimensional methods to measure poverty, living conditions in the broad sense, social inclusion/exclusion, social indicators, and social situation.

The training course on 'Poverty, Living Conditions and Cross-Cutting Social Issues' also included discussion sessions together with group activities and focused on the following topics:

  • Conceptual framework for the measurement of economic growth, poverty and inequality
    • Economic growth and living conditions of the population
    • Income or expenses and living conditions of the population and poverty 
    • Introduction to the basic principles of treatment of survey data
  • Measuring poverty
    • Methodology of the measurement of monetary poverty
    • Specific treatments for the measurement of monetary poverty

  • Poverty and inequality of living conditions in Senegal

    • Statistical tools for the measurement of inequality of households’ living conditions
  • In-depth analysis of poverty in Senegal
    • Methodological approach of the in-depth analysis of the poverty
    • Review of databases (ESPS 2011)
    • Development of the analysis plan
    • Statistical tools for the analysis of poverty
    • Introduction to DAD software
    • Group work (Group 1-2-3)
    • Summary of the group works (Group work consolidation)
