The 5th Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif under the theme of “United for Just Solution” was held in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia on 6-7 March 2016. The two-day summit with lead with preparatory convention of senior officials on 6 March and followed by a meeting of foreign ministers, with the outcomes of the first day of debates forwarded to the leaders of the OIC Member States on 7 March 2016. The issue of Palestine was discussed among the 605 delegates from 57 countries:

  • More than 500 delegates from the 49 OIC member states,
  • 4 representatives from the so-called Quartet on the Middle East (United States, Russia, United Nations, and European Union)
  • 5 UN Security Council Representatives
  • 3 observer country

The Summit addressed several crucial issues, particularly the Israeli violations over Al-Aqsa Mosque and Palestinian people with its expanding settlements and other measures. The Jakarta Declaration was delivered at the end of the summit. It pointed out the aims of the summit, notable the expected outcome by producing a resolution to reaffirm the principal view of OIC Member States in supporting an independent Palestine.

The aims of the 5th extraordinary summit on Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif listed as:

  • Associate and advance the OIC’s efforts in support of the Palestinian people in their struggle for their national and human rights.
  • Support efforts for forming a Palestinian national unity government.
  • Continue the peace process within a specific agenda, timetable and a more just effective mediation.
  • Ending the illegal and immoral blockade Israel imposes on the Gaza Strip.
  • Calling on all Member States and on the international community to ban the products of Israeli illegal settlements from their markets.
  • Calling on all OIC Member State to engage with the cause of Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif as the primary cause in international fora, including the UN Security Council and Human Rights Council.
