Within the framework of the SESRIC Agriculture and Food Security Capacity Building Programme (Agri-CaB), the Centre, in collaboration with the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) and the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) of Pakistan, organised a Training Course on “Genetic Engineering and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)” on 14-15 May 2024 through an online video conferencing platform.

The training course was provided by competent experts from NIBGE and the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC) for the benefit of 79 experts and executives from the Ministries of Agriculture and relevant national institutions in 25 OIC Member Countries.

The following topics were covered during the two days of the training:

• Agricultural Biotechnology in Pakistan and Success Stories, by Dr. Nasir A. SAEED, Deputy Chief Scientist, NIBGE

• Genome Editing in Crop Plants, Dr. Imran AMIN, Deputy Chief Scientist, NIBGE
• Detection and Biosafety of GMOs, Dr. Muhammad ASIF, Deputy Chief Scientist, NIBGE
• GMOs and OIC Countries: Balancing Food Security, Sustainability, and Legal Frameworks, Dr. Mahaletchumy ARUJANAN, Global Coordinator, ISAAA-BioTrust; Executive Director of MABIC
