Pediatric Emergency Medicine Training in Somalia

Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) organized, in collaboration with Aegean International Federation of Health (ESAFED) and Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA), a training programme on “Pediatric Emergency Medicine” on 01 November 2012-31 January 2013 in Mogadishu, Republic of Somalia. The training course was conducted by Dr. Lokman Çam, pediatrician in Kayseri Maternity and Child Hospital, Republic of Turkey. He conducted lectures on 13 different subjects related to new-born healthcare. The trainings provided Benadir University Medicine Faculty students and Benadir Hospital doctors and nurses to be equipped with key points from the literature regarding leading-edge pediatric emergency medicine topics, literature-based recommendations for practice improvement and improved diagnostics and a better treatment plan for their patients.

The training course on “Pediatric Emergency Medicine” mainly covered the following subjects:

  1. Newborn Resuscitation and Premature
  2. Congenital Heart Disease (CHD and Respiratory Disorders in the Newborn
  3. Neonatal Sepsis and Fluid, Electrolyte, and Nutrition Management of the Newborn
  4. Neonatal Jaundice and Hypothyroidism and Infants of Diabetic Mothers
  5. Neonatal Nutrition and Nutritional Management of the Infant with Necrotizing Enterocolitis
  6. Nephrology Emergencies and Malnutrition in Pediatrics
  7. Emergencies in Pediatric Hematology
  8. Pediatric Endocrine Emergencies
  9. Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Antibiotic Use, Pneumonia and Meningitis
  10. Approach to the Pediatric Patient with Diarrhea
  11. Emergencies in Pediatric Oncology
  12. Neurologic Emergencies in Pediatric Oncology
  13. Pediatric Allergy and Vaccination

The training programme was the first phase of a project targeting to overcome the infrastructure deficit of the hospitals in Somalia and to develop human capital, a critical aspect of achieving a successful national healthcare system.

At the end of training, an emergency department and neonatal resuscitation room in obstetrics and gynecology departments is planned to open in Benadir Hospital which is expected to have a positive effect on the decrease of new-born and adult morbidity and mortality rates in Somalia.
