The Regional Workshop on matching literacy programmes with income-generating activities of women, organised by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), in cooperation with the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) and the Cameroon National Commission for UNESCO, was held in Yaoundé, Cameroon on 24-26 September 2012. The workshop brought together 18 literacy officials from 9 African countries, namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Mali, Niger and Senegal.

The workshop was aimed at boosting the capacities of literacy officials of the African region for developing and implementing literacy projects linked to income-generating activities for women. Through the lectures of the supervising experts, which were followed by group work, the workshop covered the following themes:

1. Situation of women’s literacy in the participating countries.
2. Literacy and sustainable development: conceptual approach.
3. How to link literacy to sustainable development?
4. Stages of developing literacy projects linked to income-generating activities for women:

• Stages of projects development.
• Stages of projects implementation.

At the end of the workshop, the participants thanked ISESCO and SESRIC, and gave some recommendations.
