Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) organised training on “Agronomy: Soil Tillage” at the Cotton Development Organisation (CDO) in Kampala, Uganda, on 15-17 January 2013. The course was provided by Prof Sheikh El Din Abdel Gadir El-Awad, an expert from Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC) in Sudan, and was attended by 18 scientists dealing with cotton production of the CDO of Uganda.

The training course on “Agronomy: Soil Tillage” mainly covered the following subjects:

• Introduction
  • Use of mechanization in developing countries
  • Factors affecting the use of mechanization in Sudan
• Objectives of tillage operation
• Tillage implementation types for primary and secondary tillage operations
• Importance of tillage operation
• Historical background of power source development for tillage operation
• Agricultural sectors in Sudan, which include the irrigated, rain-fed, spate irrigation and sugarcane sector
• Some characteristics of cultivated soils in Sudan
• The traditional tillage operations for crop production in each agricultural sector
• The recommended research results for crop yield maximization and production cost reduction
